Wenjer Leuschel (X) Jan 22, 2006:
The distinction between 誅九族 and 誅十族 lies in the fact that one more category of persons is to be executed --- either the teachers or the students of the convict. So, it has nothing to do with the agnates in that case.
Kvasir (asker) Jan 22, 2006:
Reference please! Again, I want to emphasize that I'm looking for actual reference of the instances that the equivalent English term is used. I have an article that requires distinction between 誅九族 and 誅十族. I haven't found any instance where "Family annihilation" is used in the context of 誅九族. I can invent my own term, like I have with: Extermination/Annihilation of nine agnates. Problem is I don't have any reference to back it up. Thanks in advance to all for trying.

Here is one news article regarding thr discovery of a mass grave of a Ming Dynasty official (last name of Lin) family's mass grave after being 誅九族http://cul.news.sina.com.cn/r/2004-10-12/86380.html Take a look and maybe you can find English web refe
Wenjer Leuschel (X) Jan 17, 2006:
You don't need to reinvent the wheel. "Family annihilation" is a usual term.
Kvasir (asker) Jan 17, 2006:
All my google results came back in Chinese. I have so far no luck finding an English equivalent. I have my own proposal but I don't want to reinvent the wheel.
Wenjer Leuschel (X) Jan 17, 2006:
In that case, the term proposed by maxzhy is quite all right. "Family annihilation".
billychang Jan 17, 2006:
This is a very commonly used term and apperared in many movies. Why don't you google the term.
Kvasir (asker) Jan 17, 2006:
NB I know what this term entails. I'm looking for reference of any usage of this term in English.
Kvasir (asker) Jan 17, 2006:
oops, did it in unicode.

eradication of the whole family line

九族指的是宗親。

http://www.hnrtu.com/media_file/2005_06_14/20050614162619.do...

因此,我認為翻譯成 eradication of the whole family line 可能比較恰當。

Killing nine generations

The term in fact refers to killing nine generations(九族), including four above and four below the convict.

Mine may not be the most commonly used translation, but I think it's precise.

I got one here. But I am not sure if this is what you have been looking for.

Yes, especially in an article I want to distinguish between 誅九族 and 誅十族. I have my own proposal that is similar to yours. But haven't found any actual reference.
