Improbable vs not possible

Examples:

The claim that China will surpass US in ten years as the worlds leading industrial power is far-fetched.

Time travel is impossible.

In the first case it is theoretically possible but very very unlikely to happen. In case of the later, laws of physics would not allow it to happen.

far-fetched vs impossible

I think that the difference is as follows:

far fetched - means very difficult or very unlikely but still possible
impossible - means it is not possible by any known means to accomplish a particular task.

possible but hard to believe vs. couldn't happen

far-fetched has the sense of unlikely, made-up, like a tall-tale - possible but not probable and a bit ridiculous
