IUDs are not very popular anymore in the U.S.

IUD (Intrauterine device) or coil

A small plastic device is inserted into the womb by a gynaecologist in her office, and prevents a pregnancy from progressing. The old style IUD was very unpopular because of pain and heavy periods and some women getting bad infections and becoming infertile, however these days the coils are much safer and better tolerated. Bleeding can be controlled using natural hormones or a Mirena coil can be used, which releases progesterone into the uterus over 5 years.

An Intrauterine Device (IUD) is a small object that is inserted through the cervix and placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy. A small string hangs down from the IUD into the upper part of the vagina. The IUD is not noticeable during intercourse. IUDs can last 1-10 years. They affect the movements of eggs and sperm to prevent fertilization. They also change the lining of the uterus and prevent implantation. IUDs are 98-99% effective as birth control. They do not protect against reproductive tract infections, including HIV/AIDS.

The rhythm (or calendar) method is one of the \'biological\' forms of birth control. A couple attempts to avoid sexual intercourse just before, during and just after ovulation.

Effectiveness
The effectiveness of the rhythm method depends on how meticulously it is practiced. It also depends on the predictability of periods and consequently the ovulation period. In ideal circumstances the rhythm method could be 92% effective. This requires training and adherence to the guidelines of the rhythm method, which does not always occur. Therefore, for typical users the rhythm method is less than 87% effective

agree  J. Leo (X): Hi Rita. Some trivia: the earlier IUD's were nicknamed 'the copper 7', because of the material used its shape. The rhythm method was the only method of contraception tolerated by the Catholic Church, for married couples only, of course.

rhythm & iud
birth control - explanation

Explanation:
Agree with previous answers about IUD. But the rhythm method has, to my knowledge, nothing to do with the woman's fertile time of the month.

The rhythm method involves the man 'pulling out' before there is any risk of conception.

disagree  humbird: No, definitely not. What you are talking about is called "withdrawal" of "coitus interruptus" See this page. http://www.medicinenet.com/birth_control/page7.htm

disagree  Christine Andersen: Susan Koyama is right

neutral  airmailrpl: 'pulling out' would definitely be a lack of rhythm !!
