German term

anknüpfen (kontext)

German to English Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Hi,

Wie könnte man hier "anknüpfen" formell übersetzen?
Kontext:
"Es werden ausgewählte Themen behandelt, soweit sich hier an die Inhalte der Grundvorlesungen im ersten Studienjahr anknüpfen lässt."

Vielen Dank für eure Hilfe!

I know, but the thing is... he's a native and I'm not so I can't say anything.
Kim Metzger May 12, 2004:
Nothing "slangy" about pick up the thread.
Non-ProZ.com May 12, 2004:
pick up the thread Das war auch mein Vorschlag, aber der Kunde fand es zu "slangy" und mchte eine anspruchsvollere Formulierung.

relate

something derived from Latin then. I'd need more context, but here's a go:

The lectures/seminar or, possibly, We ... will cover selected topics/themes related to the content of the first-year introductory lectures.

more freely: ...will cover selected topics, building on the content ...

The soweit is restrictive (...topics/themes but only if they relate to...), but I don't really get it.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Ingrid Blank : soweit here is not meant in a restrictive sense, i.e. only if, but rather in the meaning of to the extent that they ...

Trying to be brief, I may not have not expressed myself very well. Both 'onnly' and 'to the extent that' limit/specify the subset of topics. To me, after "ausgewählt," the "soweit" is a bit redundant. Fortunately, the asker has access to the author.
agree Textklick : inasmuch as they are related to?

Like this solution, nicely formal and helpfully vague

agree Jeremy Amos : Maybe "selected topics which relate to..." or "selected topics, where these relate to..."
