English term or phrase: byte
Hi,

Can you help me to translate the term 'byte' ?

It's about a tool used in CNC machining (sometimes written as 'bite')

" With this function work piece is machined by scratching using a BYTE and controlling the spindle rotation. "

" This allows precise positioning of the tool at a specific angle. Machining is carried out with the spindle rotation stopped. The hale byte removes material by scratching the workpiece. "

Thanks in advacne.

French translation:outil
Explanation:
My guess is it's a mistake: it should be "bit" (mèche, outil) in the sense of tool (or the cutting part of it) for machining a blank to make parts/pieces

neutral  Bourth: A 'fraise' rotates, this 'byte' does not. OK for 'outil'.

agree  Johannes Gleim: outil d'usinage would comprise all different types of bits for machining..

neutral  Daryo: it is some kind of tool, but "outil" might be not specific enough.// if the term relevant for the ST is the whole of "hale byte" then THAT is the term to translate - whichever way the question was asked.

-> yes, but bit is non specific (unless clear from context or stated) in English too. Asker's text says "hale", which I ignore what it is, as qualifier, but they ask about "byte" alone. I interpret it as "bit"

A tool bit is a non-rotary cutting tool used in metal lathes, shapers, and planers. Such cutters are also often referred to by the set-phrase name of single-point cutting tool, as distinguished from other cutting tools such as a saw or water jet cutter. The cutting edge is ground to suit a particular machining operation and may be resharpened or reshaped as needed. The ground tool bit is held rigidly by a tool holder while it is cutting.
