English translation: nonies

French to English translations [PRO]
Law/Patents - Law: Taxation & Customs / public finance
French term or phrase: nonies
Art. 242 nonies E

From the earlier searches, I found out that nonies term is translated as ninth (section 9, paragraph 9), but given the source segment i am not clear how to translate it. Should Art 242 section 9 F be good enough?

English translation:nonies
Explanation:
You should leave it untranslated, as it's a numbering system that's not used in English.

I thought we might have had this term before, but we haven't. However, we have had this:

agree  Steve Robbie: Agree generally. The exception is EU legislation, in which article 10 bis, 10 ter ... 10 nonies in the French version of the text will be called article 10a, 10b ... 10h in the English version.

neutral  Daryo: it should be left as it is, but for a different reason: so that the reader of the translation can easily find the original text of this article if needed.// The "implications" are maybe in your head, but not in your text.

  -> That's implied in my answer, and you'd understand that if you were a native speaker.

agree  AllegroTrans: Correct - leave as is. Why is Daryo "neutral" when he agrees?

Art 242 nonies E
s. 242 (9h) E

Explanation:
See Steve R's comment: 'The exception is EU legislation, in which article 10 nonies in the French version of the text will be called article 10h in the English version.'

> Art, is translatable as section or Continentally as § + *subsection* 9h E rather than F.

This *has* come up before. See the first weblink.

> nonies is too close to a nonce - disastrously for UK consumption - or convent nuns : 'les religieuses' that also doubles as a pastry au chocolat.

> house numbering eg 9 bis = 9A ter B quater C quinquies D sexies E septies F octies G novies *H* decies I

Example sentence(s):
  • A Nonce is another word for p(a)edo in the UK.

neutral  Steve Robbie: You wrote "9h" but what you mean is s. 242 (h) E.

  -> - even better, though I wanted a 'double whammy' : 9 + h.. Thanks anyway for confirming the EU legislative convention in your comment on Phil G's 'nonies' baby talk answer. https://www.proz.com/kudoz/french-to-english/law-patents/386...

neutral  philgoddard: You can't leave it in French because it might be confused with a nun or a pedophile? That's bizarre.

  -> baby 'noncey' talk is inappropriate for a statutory reference. Pls. refer to Steve Robbie's EU legislative exception,

neutral  AllegroTrans: More than bizarre; downright silly // my "silly" remark refers to your infantile talk about nuns and paedophiles which simply doesn't help anyone

  -> Utterly ridiculous, baby 'nonies' talk is inappropriate for a statutory reference. I'm surprised, Chris, that you overlooked the EU legislative convention of h for nonies mentioned by Steve R.

agree  AllegroTrans: tedious

  -> as legalese can often be OTOH it's all very "relative" - if this tedious stuff could help you save few millions in taxes it would suddenly become positively riveting / fascinating, don't you think? // Just a good sample. Thanks!
agree  Anastasia Kalantzi: Exhausting...but we're awfully alike!
2 hrs
  -> Thanks!
neutral  Adrian MM.: still inconclusive and would score a fail on a legislative drafting exam. BTW, it's excamples or precedents, rather than 'samples'.
