Spanish term

linea modulada

Spanish to English Other Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
A text about Uruguayan modern painter Rafael Barradas:

He also engaged in graphic experimentation on the poster support. These pieces are characterized by a playful typographic use of letters and numbers as connecting... modulated lines

It appears that linea modulada refers to a line that grows thicker and thinner over the course of a stroke. There are some hits for "modulated line" in English, but not many and not very convincing. Is there a term for this sort of line in English?

Thanks

Discussion

liz askew Sep 7, 2021:
oh, "articulaciones" can also = relationships

I am thinking too much of medical terms.
liz askew Sep 7, 2021:
articulaciones lineales moduladas.
here, as I understand it, "lineales" is an adjective, rather than a noun (lines)

Although I found this in relation to robots (in Spanish and English)

Linear joint: in linear joints, the relative motion between the input and output link is a linear sliding motion, with the axis of the two links being parallel.
liz askew Sep 7, 2021:
articulaciones lineales = linear joints?
philgoddard Sep 7, 2021:
Soporte means medium, not support.

Fluctuating line

To get round 'articulaciones' I've found via French the possibility of 'interfaces', hence
'fluctuating line interfaces' for what it's worth...

As for 'linea modulada':

Spanish term (edited): lineales moduladas

Humanist

'Lineales moduladas' is a typeface which is also called 'lineales humanísticas' which in English is 'humanistic' or 'humanist'. It's normally sans serif fonts but not always. Barradas' posters used both serif and sans serif.

"Humanistic Sans Serif
These are based on the proportions of Roman inscriptional letters. Frequently, contrast in stroke weight is readily apparent. Typographic experts claim that these are the most legible and most easily read of the sans serif typefaces. Humanistic sans serif typefaces also closely match the design characteristics and proportions of serif types, often with a strong calligraphic influence."

"Humanist

The first Roman type was derived from calligraphy, so the shape of letterforms is based on formal writing with a flat brush or a broad nib pen. The term Humanist has traditionally been used for serif typefaces, but nowadays there is also Humanist Sans"

agree ormiston : How can we not agree with your impressive research!

agree philgoddard : You've also noticed that 'linea modulada' doesn't appear in Wendy's text. And I would add a few words of explanation, as with 'roman', because people won't understand 'humanist'.

adjered, varied or regulated line

A modulated or modulating line is regulated by, adjusted to, varied or altered to a certain measure or proportion, to soften down or enhance tones, alter or adapt linear formations and connections or lettering of a poster background or medium, as the pitch, tone or level of a voice or colour could be adapted according to circumstances.
