As regards Maßnahmen vs. Aktionen, I think you can just do your own "defining" here (Maßnahmen has been "defined" by us as action and Aktionen as steps) as this does not concern a key part of the job. I think there are minor drafting quality problems with the German and if the translator then agrees to do their own "defining", that settles it. The end customer can then adjust the translation as they please using Search and Replace with regard to "Maßnahmen" and "Aktionen" as the German defining (this time around without inverted commas even though there is no definitions list in our German text) wasn't done right.

How about "fact pattern" - it's one of my favo(u)rite translations of "Sachverhalt". Doesn't work in all situations, of course, but shouldn't be discounted.

The SAP terminology German/English is normally set in stone. The SAP dictionary suggests the translation "subject", which I don't like in this context. Do you agree with Astrid and me that "subject" should not be used here and that the SAP-savy end customer will probably understand our rationale?

Me, personally, I like these much better. However, SAPism is a religion. What do you as a native speaker say to this: Sachverhalt - Problem, das in einer Qualitätsmeldung beschrieben wird [our context] -> subject. http://www.sapterm.com/

I don't like it all that much but am waiting for feedback. Dealing with a religion can mean you end up in the middle of a << complaint >> if the Dharma is violated.

In that case, there are several possible translations and you can just take your pick. Reason, issue, details, circumstances...
