...and also that "candidates" standing all alone really has little to no significant meaning.
At bare minimum, it would need to be qualified by "candidate [for what]"...
The term really means "qualifiers", which becomes redundant since they're now already accepted by the institute...

It is mis-spelled. Correct is "Qualifikant". As they are already being supported by the institute, they are not candidates but rather accepted candidates. They are being trained and thus not candidates, trainees captures their status fairly well. To become a trainee, they had to qualify, so the successful candidates become a "Qualifikant" (the -in used to indicate females).

Narrows the field somewhat, suggesting that the candidates had to go through some kind of selection process as the word "Qualifikant" does imply. But the straightforward 'candidate' is fine.
