When we translate a certificate, the end user wants to know what everything in the document means. I've had more than one client ask me to translate letterhead slogans, official seals, stamps, form numbers in the bottom corner of a page, and all other kinds of "irrelevant" material. If you don't know what it says, you don't know if it's irrelevant.

Well put, Carol.That is what I wanted to say but didn't express myself very well. I often translate slogans for my clients, but they own the slogans. Translating a government sloga and putting it in the glossary might make it look official and the intellectual property police might object.

@ YESHWANT: yes, of course we transcreate slogans all the time, but I think Franglish has a point that this one might already have some official translation lurking somewhere. In any case, I think I'd be wary of making this translation sound like THE official English version

I personally do not see an issue in translating slogans. Most Francophone countries have slogans which appear on all government letterheads like "Liberté, égalité, fraternité" which are routinely translated into other languages

I'd go with Charles' version "People who work and achieve great things" with the option of replacing the word 'work' with 'strive', making it "People who strive and achieve great things"

My point is the legality of translating a slogan without the author's permission. Obviously the task at hand is to translate the document, but the actual slogan might be an issue. And I agree with franglish that not relevant. Maybe translating so many privacy policies is making me paranoid.

There might be one, but I doubt it. It's for internal use in Mexico; I can't see why the Mexican authorities would have an English version of it or who it would be for. The Mexican federal and state governments assume everyone they're addressing speaks Spanish; they don't seem to commission English versions of their material, as the Spanish government does, for example, at least to a limited extent.

I doubt you're the first person to translate it, but a quick Google search doesn't lead me to any online version.

"People who work hard and achieve great things" would be reasonably idiomatic (IMO), if you want to give a fairly literal version. But of course, as Carol says, there are endless other ways of expressing the same idea.

Each state in Mexico has its own driver's license, yours is from the Estado de Méjico, the only one I could find with this logo. I for one wouldn't translate it as it's not pertinent information.

There are countless possible ways of expressing this, which is why I agree with Marie that you should look for an existing official translation. If you google it, you’ll see that you’re not the first to translate very similar phrases
