Collateral vessels form to preserve blood flow in the event of blockages. Nothing to do with side effects. I would say "filled by heterocoronary collateral vessels (or circulation instead of vessels)".

: Ciao Fiona. I would not use "heterocoronary" ... see my comment above. Also, this article is a translation. A fairly good one, but you can see the occasional unnatural phrasing.

While "heterocoronary" may not be as common as the term "intercoronary" you suggest (thank you for the suggestion), it IS used, in papers by native English authors. If you disagree with "filled by", go ahead and post an alternative.
