"points" bezeichnet bei einer Weiche genaugenommen die Zungenspitze, während "switch" die ganze Weiche bedeutet.

Strecke verwechselt werden, weil Weichen zum Befahren einen und untereinander verriegelt werden müssen, um Entgleisungen vorzubeugen und die Signale auf freie Fahrt stellen zu können. Deshalb enthält der englische Begriff auch das Wort "interlocking".

These points can be moved laterally into one of two positions to direct a train coming from the point blades toward the straight path or the diverging path. Discussion
Since my professional activities as railway engineer I am familiar with switches, signals and all interlocks and know what I say. I've planned such installations in Germany and abroad from examination of existing pilot boxes and signalling and locking devices, including remote control, over conception of new systems and execution planning to tendering and supervision of work.
