The term is from a report in Spanish (CL) on hydrography data processing, specifically regarding Hypack HYSWEEP Multibeam SURVEY readings, that needs to be translated into English (US). This is the paragraph:

“Para la captura de la información y para el procesamiento de los datos se utilizará el software de hidrografía Hypack HYSWEEP Multibeam SURVEY. Durante el procesamiento de los datos del archivo obtenido en terreno se le aplican las correcciones por marea y por velocidad del sonido, obteniendo la sonda final o sonda plano.”

So far I have the following translation:

“In order to capture the information and for data processing a hydrography software Hypack HYSWEEP Multibeam SURVEY. During data processing, to record data obtained on field are applied corrections by tide and sound speed, obtaining final sounding or ….”

However, I can seem to find “Sonda plano” anywhere. I hope you can help me with this.

Explanation:
I think the asker is on the right track - I think "sonda" here is "sounding." This refers to a measurement of the depth of a fluid at a specific location, whether in a tank on board a ship, or for navigation on the Mississippi River, or for bathymetry in the ocean or some other body of water.
In the ocean, among other variables, the influence of tidal variations on these measurements has to be taken into account. The desired final product is determination of the "true" water level, however that may be defined in a given situation. The velocity of sound may have to be accounted for, if the measuring method uses sound waves.

neutral  Thomas Walker: What gives me pause is: the phrase in the ST is "la sonda final o sonda plano" - it seems to me that if "sonda final" is "final sounding", "sonda plano" must be bringing in some other (but related) meaning, otherwise why introduce it?

  -> That's a good point. ESP writers use a lot of redundancies. An example in EN, not suggesting that this be used here 'the final, or end result.
