After returning from work , I have found hte basis in my dictionaries for my answer:

“Parent(母体OR亲体)” has a different meaning from POPULATION (总体OR母体)in the biological world. There may be some term confusion. Parent in genetics mean the original generation and in chemistry it means the substances other chemicals derived from maybe. But it is not used standing for either population or sample.
In Taiwan they use 母体instead of 总体 in statistics. My guess is this material containing 母体 to be translated is from Taiwan not from Mainland China. This may be the reason for all the confusion. Please refer to http://probstat.nuk.edu.tw/content2/statics_1.htm and http://www.google.com/search?q=母体样本 POPULATION&ie=UTF-8&oe=U...
So the 母体 here really means 总体 (POPULLATON) of mainland China, not parent, source, or mother.
Moreover, I think here 14 is not enough for either母体 or 总体(population),or in there ward母体样本,so here we should just use “ sample ”.

For example: Extracellular Matrix Sample Exam Questions (from Google). Matrix is the word you want.

jyuan_us
: Thank you. However I have to say it is not the answer. Matrix means the table. The simplest Matrix is 2 X 2 table, which is used to demonstrate the data of at least 2 samples. Sample is sample, table is table. Matrix never used to describe a sample.

the meaning...
So 14 questionnaires came back, but of those, only 8 were used in the final analysis? Six were put aside.
Maybe this is self-evident. You need a word for the 14 before the 6 are pulled out...
I'm not sure that 样本 = sample
It really means 'valid returns'or 'questionnaire responses'
样本can be translated sample book, or specimen book in some cases.

I think Jianming is right.
This is a term in statistics.
母体样本 = samples from the parent population
母体 = parent population (or population)
样本=samples
Please see the following two websites:
1. From http://140.112.92.42/wwang/Sbook/study/the-15-study.files/fr...
母群体(Parent Population,Universe):
2. From http://probstat.nuk.edu.tw/content2/statics_1.htm
3. In your example, suppose there are 1000 people in your college, and you sent out 15 questionnaires within the college. The 1000 people are “母体” (parent population). The 14 questionnaires you recovered are “母体样本” (samples from the population). The 6 persons who do not eat chocolate are called subset (子集). I hope this would be helpful.
By the way, I am not afraid of chocolate at all! :)
