Homeroom teacher.

English to Spanish Other Education / Pedagogy
I would like to know the best translation of this phrase from American English into Latin American Spanish.

It's the translation of a conference about education. Is okay to translate as profesor de la primera clase del dia?

Maestro o profesor This is a case - as in most cases - where knowing the target audience is paramount. My suggestion was based on elementary and kindergarden communities in the US and other Spanish speaking countries. If the text is targeted to junior/high, and thinking of the function Marcelo describes, I would think of calling that teacher something like “profesor orientador/principal/responsable por la clase” if I need to distinguishher/him from other teachers. I would not call it “tutor” because, to me, this implies a one to one relationship. I would not say “titular” because it implies a sort of “ownership” (for lack of a better world). I would not definitely not use the term “hogar”. As different educational systems have different structures and we don’t have such teacher in our schools (as far as I know,; there are quite a number of educational systems in Spanish speaking countries and it is hard to affirm things ARE in certain way). Where I live, “maestros" is just for elementary and kindergarden, after that they are called “profesores” and they are specialized by disciplines (it is the most visible distinction between a “maestro” and “profesor".

In U.S. schools, a 'homeroom' teacher ...is the one with whom (junior high school and high school) students engage for the first 10-12 minutes of the day, i.e., before 1st period: they take attendance, make any necessary announcements, and basically get them 'ready' for first period. This is my understanding of the term having attended (and taught) at schools in the U.S.

Es posible que en EE.UU se use "salón hogar" como una traducción literal de inglés, pero para un hablante de español puede remitir a un "hogar escuela" que son escuelas donde viven los niños.
"Home" aquí tiene el sentido de "base" y, a pesar del poco contexto, diría que se refiere al maestro principal, al responsable por la clase, en contraposición a los maestros de educación física, de música, o de arte.
Aunque esto varía de escuela a escuela y de país en país, el "maestro" es una figura de los jardines de infantes y primarias (en la secundaria, no hay un "maestro" sino profesores por materias) y es el responsable por la clase, el que imparte el contenido básico.
El hecho que aparezca después de la barra denota que es un equivalente a "maestro de clase", en mi opinión otra información redundante.
Usaría simplemente "maestro de su hijo". Por defecto, el maestro es el maestro responsable.

Sí, queda más claro. En España con "tutor" se sobrentiende que es el encargado del curso, claro que la traducción no es para España.

I doubt it, if one uses definition 2 in DRAE: "2. m. y f. Persona encargada de orientar a los alumnos de un curso o asignatura."

Usualmente, el homeroom teacher es el maestro titular responsable del grupo. Jamás he oído el término salón hogar, es un calco del inglés.
