French term

Contrôle par le Bailleur

French to English Law/Patents Law: Contract(s)
This is a heading in a lease agreement. Here is the text that falls under the heading.

(Proof of) insurance

A literal translation doesn't make much sense, because it's not clear what "verification" refers to. I would argue that you should substitute a heading that summarises what the paragraph says.
Peer comment(s):

neutral AllegroTrans : you've changed this too much and the "verification" suggestion works perfectly well because the clause goes on to say clearly what is to be verified

Yes, but you have to read the whole paragraph before you understand what "verification" means. Verification can refer to lots of things, and the heading should be instantly understandable.
neutral writeaway : it's legal, not marketing or business. one isn't as free to 'rearrange' the source text. somewhere along the way, it has to resemble the original.

Lessor's duty to check insurance cover

In English, unless the paragraph describes a number of things which are to be checked by the lessor, it would be usual to see something more explanatory. I take Phil's point and do rather lean towards his approach. It is also important not to add something that is not in the original. What convinces me to follow Phil's thinking is that "Verification by the Lessor" is not a likely choice in EN documents of this type, unless, as pointed out at the start, a number of things are to be checked.

Some may consider my suggestion a little OTT, but this is describing a duty, "le Bailleur devra justifier, etc.".

Or "Lessor's duty to verify insurance cover"

Lessor's right to make verrifications/carry out checks (on insurance cover).

neutral philgoddard : Glad you agree with my approach :-) Legal documents are not sacrosanct, and it is OK to tweak them now and then. Though it's not really about the lessor's duty to check it, it's the lessee's duty to obtain it.

My suggesetion is OTT. It is about the Lessee's duty to provide in response to the Lessor's request. So yes, if anything, the duty is on the Lessee. Quite right. I smartly got it the wrong way round. Oops! See additional note.
