French term

C’est un élément très carburigène

French to English Science Physics steel alloys
The whole phrase is a description of tungsten, from a list of steel additives. I know what this means, it refers to the element's excellent ability to form a carbide, but I can't find an equivalent term in English that works in this sentence.

Discussion

chris collister Jul 16, 2016:
Elements that combine easily with other elements are said to have a strong *affinity* for one another. In this case, tungsten (W) has a strong affinity for carbon (C), forming the compound tungsten carbide (WC). I would simply say that "tungsten is an element with a strong affinity for carbon". It's pretty obvious that the resulting compound is a carbide.

It is a strongly carbide-generating/forming element

"Chromium spreads between the ferrite and carbide phases the spread depending on the amount of carbon and other carbide generating elements present.
Tungsten and molybdenum form carbides if sufficient carbon is present which has not already formed carbides with other stronger carbide forming elements. "

Changed my mind about this answer: a carbide generating element could mean a catalyst or an element releasing carbon to form a carbide with a third (carbide forming) element. So, while I'm not hiding this, please don't bother agreeing with it.
