Discussion

neilmac Jul 9, 2016:
@Lorna I believe in keeping it simple. So, if Spanish says portal, best call it a portal in English too. When in Spanish it says "página web", they usually mean a website, although a webpage and a website aren't synonyms either. A portal can agglomerate several websites.

Although 'portal' is also used, I tend to use 'website' because I believe it is used more often on websites in the UK.

For example, in the T&Cs of this UK hotel, you'll see how they only mention 'website' and there is no mention of 'portal': http://www.themayfairhotel.co.uk/en/terms-of-use.html

They should really change this dictionary entry to diferentiate the two! I don't smoke anymore, so I won't miss the cigar ;-)

Website vs Portal

The link shows an example of how a website (GS1 Australia) can have a portal as one of its subsidiary features.
My GS1 Portal: basic user account management feature you can access to retrieve invoices, make payment and manage simple membership and contact details.

And in other cases, it may be vice versa, i.e. a portal that has several websites accessing it, for example GDSN.
