Designação atribuída no século XIII ao escrivão responsável pelos documentos particulares do rei. Era, assim, um homem de confiança dos monarcas. No reinado de D. Pedro I, este funcionário passou a ser detentor do Selo de Camafeu ou Selo da Puridade, que permitia autenticar documentos régios, sem necessidade de passar pela chancelaria. Era da sua competência tudo o que dissesse respeito a Cortes, bem como os negócios exteriores. O cargo foi restaurado já no século XVII, por D. Afonso VI, que o atribuiu ao conde de Castelo Melhor. Com a queda deste ministro, o cargo foi extinto.

Porém, ainda é preciso saber se a tradução dá conta da estrutura hierárquica a que a expressão "keeper of the seal" se refere. Mas enquanto tradução meramente linguística, guardião do selo, como apontou Clauwolf, parece funcionar.
