Translator and Proofreader

My life in a Nutshell

Background

When I got into College at the age of nineteen I still lived in Recife—my hometown, a city located on the Northeast coast of Brazil. I went to Universidade Federal de Pernambuco; there I got a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science, and four years later at the same University I became a member of the Master’s Degree Program in Sociology.
Throughout my college years I displayed a huge interest for the written language, which manifested itself through paying more attention to stylistic details in books and articles as well as by reading more of the cream of classic and contemporary writers. Besides the passion for culture in a much broader sense (for instance cinema, literature, music, and theater), I also came to fall in love with foreign languages—a passion which is until now restricted to English and French. Oddly enough, only few years later, when I was working as an English Teacher at a language school, it occurred to me I should bring all those passions together and become a translator.
As I wanted to know the old continent, I decided to move to Portugal to attend college lessons—but this time to get a Master’s Degree in Translation. When I got my Master’s Degree, I enrolled in a Ph.D. program in Linguistics. I now intend to write a thesis on Bilingual Lexicography.

Work as a Professional Linguist

I started off as a proofreader and copy editor in 2015, but I’ve been working as a full-time English to Brazilian Portuguese translator since 2014. My first translation work was a 56,000-word book on fisheries and a fish-protein based diet, A Proteína Perfeita.Currently I collaborate with several agencies to whom I work most of times as a Legal, Business, and Survey Research Translator. But I also have experience in translating from a much broader array of fields, from Clinical Trials to Fisheries to Marketing.
