At the same time, the different texts in this book show how
the materiality of bodies – their shapes and spatiality, visuality
IN troduction | 13
and biologicity, material flexibility and plasticity – can be incorporated
into the understanding of bodies, without restricting this
understanding to these aspects or making deterministic biological
claims. Rather, the livability of bodies, as the “most solid and
concrete dimension of our self-experience” (Käll), rests on these
immediate and material aspects of bodily presence. Still, even if
the materiality of bodies is a pre-condition for human existence,
the understanding of such a pre-condition, as many of the contributions show, can never be isolated from the social and cultural
dimensions of body matters.
In different ways and with different points of departure, the articles
in this part contribute to transdisciplinary efforts to create an
understanding of the body that incorporates the materiality and
biologicity of the body, without reducing it to this. The articles
thus re-claim biological subjects as part of the feminist research
agenda.

This is very vaguely formulated, since it is possible to imagine several indeterminate cases of the biologicality of the body given this formulation.

As for our 'animal nature' (I usually call it 'biological nature' or 'biologicality') and whether it is uniquely human to transcend it, or one is 'more human' the more one does so, again there are lots of interesting points to think about. I often feel resentful of my biologicality, even as I appreciate embodiment -- for example when I get sick, or when I am forced to attend to biological needs while I'd rather be doing something else.

The thesis of the paper is the assumption that medicine emerges out of esthetic distance. It is created by culture forms due to which biologicality of human body is restrained and subordinated.

Elzenberg’s negative freedom—necessary and essential—is freedom from one’s own biologicality but also from violence, whilst positive freedom—desired and valuable—the freedom to pursue values, is conditioned by the first.
