@Phil, slings and arrows are both weapons that mame and kill used metaphorically simply to mean the same thing to injure. To sign and to make the decision to sign are really two quite differents things: "I signed, but it wasn't my decision, I was told to/I was forced to/I had no choice etc." Here we have a reason for signing resulting in a decision and it needs to be clearly underlined in the translation as it is in the original.
Anyway I posted because IMHO I don't think you can omit this here. I don't see it as mere formal verbiage which can be cut.
