fechar as contas no azul

Portuguese to English Bus/Financial
Será que vamos conseguir fechar as contas no azul? (= não ficar com déficit no fim do mês)

Gostaria de uma expressão que evitasse o uso de "deficit" e/ou que não soasse formal demais. Obrigada.

Much obliged
agree C Aguiar : this is not as close to the literal "fechar as contas" but I think it is the most idiomatic.

This is how we usually express not being in the red (having a deficit) the color black

with a positive balance

That's how it is said most of the time.

You do hear 'in the red' quite often, but I can't say the same about 'in the black'.

A more appropriate use for 'in the black' would be 'a company is in the black'.

My suggestion : )

Also, depending on the context (which might be the case here since you mentioned \"no fim do mês\") I don\'t think that \'close the accounts\' is the right translation. I would go with Almicar\'s suggestion and say
\'end the month with a positive balance\'.

Let's see if we can BREAK EVEN this month

I agree with in the black. Given that Carolina wants an expression meaning LET'S MAKE SURE WE DON'T LOSE MONEY, then break even is the one.
Peer comment(s):

agree Amilcar : Not Bad!!! Then we will translate it back into pt as "vamos a ver se atingimos equilíbrio este mês."

Do you think we'll manage to be in the black at this month's closing?

in the red=with a shortfall or deficit

in the black= with money int he account

that is the expression for no azul....

fechar as contas= to do a closing

but here, at closing
