English term

account for

English to Japanese Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng electric power generation
account for xxx error?? (scale error, delay error, shift error...)

This is English to Japanese patent translation.
Tech field is calibration of genset controllers.
What is this "account for?" In other words?
My guess are compensate, accommodate, correct...

Sentences in question:

The second calibration process may be used to adjust the calibration factors determined during the first calibration process and thereby account for additional errors caused by sensors 50.

Power system 10 may include a calibration system 52 associated with genset 22 and load 12 that accounts for the offset, scale, and time delay errors described above.

These adjustments may account for influences external to controller 48, for example, influences of sensors 50, transmission network 24, connector 26, load 12, etc. Controller 48 may adjust the calibration factors accordingly, and store the adjusted calibration factors in memory module 48a for subsequent monitor ing/interpreting use by processor module 48b (Step 330).

Thank you everyone I really appreciate. As David said, this may be just a wrong or personal usage of the writer. I still havent't found such examples from dictionaries.

English term (edited): may account for

I think in this context (seeing as it's written by several Americans) it means explain. "Account for" is a phrasal verb adn has a set definition. I can see why you'd think it was "compensate" but here it is "X explains the Y error"

Obviously (in the case of "account for the differences") the author is using "account for" to mean "compensate for/correct" so I would go with that. I suppose it's another case of technicians not making the best writers. It makes a little more sense in the overall context given after "account for the differences." It could go unnoticed when spoken but when written it's plain wrong. That said, it's the translators job to make sense of what the intended meaning is so if I would take the instances of "account for" to mean "compensate for/correct." Though you might want to mention this when the job is delivered. Good luck with the rest of the job!

Note from asker:
Thank you but I have checked major usages in advance. None of them looks good. Especially the second sentence doesn't make sense. I think this usage is a bit unusual. In the patent description, calibration is performed to compensate/accomodate these errors. The reason or cause of the errors doesn't matter at all here. So currently my guess is this: Supply or make up (a specified amount or proportion): http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/account-for?q=account+for But I'm not confident at all...
And I found some similar usages. I'm not sure these sentences are fully correct. But obviously these usages are uncommon ones...
