modern (and contemporary) avant-garde

Explanation:
They say "avanguardia storica e contemporanea". I would render it as modern (for "storica") and contemporary avant-garde.

... the modern music period (and the avant garde ever-present in it) starts more or less from Monteverdi and Palestrina – as modern painting beginning more or less with Ligabue.
The contemporary music starts much later, perhaps as late as Beethoven... as the contemporary art – basically with Cezanne.

In the modern music, Bach (with his syncopated chords, etc.) was definitely avant-garde.... as Paolo Uccello - in modern art.

In modern music Berg, Schoenberg, Webern and others from the third Viennese School were, too, regarded as avant-garde. Now they are classics... :)))

You cannot be wrong with this term.

See Wiki link
"The term avant-garde is applied to music when it is considered "ahead of its time" by critics or fans, i.e., it contains unique or original elements, or it explores unusual fusions of different genres. In a historical sense, musicologists use the term "avant-garde music" for the radical compositions that succeeded the death of Anton Webern in 1945.[1] This period is typically thought to begin with Wagner[2] or Josquin des Prez.[3][contradiction]"

Please, if you decide for the more widespread usage 'avant-garde' (modern French) add also this variant, because probably is the first variant and clearly comes from Old French, vanguard; see vanguard.

neutral  Catherine Bolton: Where do you find that the term "avant-guard" is used mostly in the field of music? The link you provided to back up your statement doesn't say that at all! SORRY, but I remain unconvinced. Try googling "avant-guard music" versus "avant-garde music".
