I quite agree that no spelling is truly 'correct' — however, my point was just that the Scots spelling is likely to be more familiar and generic, and if one uses the Irish spelling, one risks creating a possibly false impression that we are specifically talking about the Irish brew (at least among those who are aware of the difference).

Despite being married to an Irish wife I see "whiskey" used in England just about as often as "whisky" and I have even seen it used in Scotland. Whilst I agree with Tony that the Scots and the Irish have these 2 variants, I really wonder whether many people know the difference. The word is in any event an anglicisation of "uisge beatha" (water of life/eau de vie) and therefore no spelling can strictly be called "correct"

In that case, I'd suggest using the Scots spelling 'whisky', which is far more generalized as the generic term for this type of drink.

...more like 10-pin bowling or skittles, since 'pétanque' is little practised in the UK; our 'equivalent' (!) game would be 'crown bowls', but I think playing a skittles-like game, using (hopefully empty!) bottles of whisky as the 'quilles' is more plausible; unless, of course, the idea is that you win the (full) bottle if you knock it over!

Note that 'whiskey' is the Irish version, the spelling may or may not have any significance in terms of the game being referred to.

There is a sort of game where you 'bowl' with a ball attached by a string to the top of a pole, and aim to knock over a loan skittle... perhaps that is a more likely version?
