a chip off the old block
Explanation:
Hecho de la misma madera que mi padre.

Es algo informal, pero quizás vaya en el contexto. Lo bueno es que mantiene la imagen de 'madera'. En español he escuchado algo como ,'una astilla del mismo palo', que sería equivalente.

I'm just like my father

Explanation:
OK, you lose the 'madera' part but this fit's well into the sentence.

I like 'chip off the old block' but you'll have to put 'father' in there somewhere unless it's very obvious from what comes before this line.

Just looking at different sources that explain 'chip off the old block'. Is it presumed that we are always referring to the father?

Amanda Thatcher gave composed reading during grandmother's funeral
Self-assured reading widely praised on social networks, some describing her as a 'chip off the old block'

Margaret Thatcher’s granddaughter displayed a steely composure worthy of the Iron Lady herself as she addressed St Paul’s Cathedral yesterday – and then told a politician who complimented her performance that it was ‘in the blood’.

I'm made of the same stuff as my father

Explanation:
Or simply 'I take after my father'. Yes, loses the 'wood' image, which 'chip off the block' keeps; but as mentioned, you need to build 'father' in with it, which isn't obvious.
