OK, you lose the 'madera' part but this fit's well into the sentence.

I like 'chip off the old block' but you'll have to put 'father' in there somewhere unless it's very obvious from what comes before this line.

Just looking at different sources that explain 'chip off the old block'. Is it presumed that we are always referring to the father?

Some sources I've come across:

if someone is a chip off the old block, they are very similar in character to one of their parents or to another older member of their family (not used with the ) Look at her bossing everyone around - she's a real chip off the old block!

Or simply 'I take after my father'. Yes, loses the 'wood' image, which 'chip off the block' keeps; but as mentioned, you need to build 'father' in with it, which isn't obvious.
