Maybe the phrase is too wound up with Tolkien, but he actually did conceive of Middle Earth in the trenches. I don't think it is a good translation.

I just read your last addition, but despite seeing your p.o.v. I still think 'the no man's land' is misleading. (Though I do like the 'THE' which mitigates the 'conflictual' connotationj). AFFRONTARE can often mean ' to face an enemy', but here it would seem used rather diffferently, more like ***affrontare una situazione, un problema, una incomprensione*** che sorgono ovunque migranti, di diverse origini e non solo, convivono. Thank you for your time, and I hope I am not misunderstood.

in some particular scenarios, in Film Documentaries I've written on the Sunderbans, or in describing mountain villages perched midway between clouds and visibility, (and not to mention Tolkien's Middle Lands'), I have sometimes called these grey areas 'the lands between'.

you're quite right, not really enough context! It is indeed about immigration, the film mentioned as an example is someone who goes to live in a small mountain village, whereas this is for a new documentary they're making about Asian immigrants in Italy

Or frontier zones, or boundaries, or no-man's lands, or halfway houses...

Simon has explained the context in the discussion entries - it's about immigrants who are in a kind of limbo between one culture and another.

So can you honestly say you've never posted more than one term, (a) to give the asker more choice and (b) to increase the likelihood of your answer being chosen? Dictionaries and glossaries give multiple possible translations. :-)

And "terre di mezzo" doesn't immediately conjure up just that same space between the trenches, Tony? And immigrants never feel as is they are living in a war zone as in the war between bands in westside story, or places like Beirut where different ethnic cultures and religions meet in a "terra di mezzo"?
