I was just wondering what ideas people had about glossing this term for UK English.

My context reads:

"..un importante protagonista della produzione artigianale di scarpe made in Italy."

I am not looking for a translation, just a way of incorporating the term into a promotional text for the GB market with a gloss to cover those who are, understandably, not "in the know" about these things. I have put:

"...handmade shoes under the “made in Italy” code of quality"

But is this actually a "code of quality" or an "ethical code"?

For a certain kind of English or American person, "Italian shoes" is full of connotations. No need to spell out what these are. I'd just say "an important name in hand-made Italian shoes"

I wouldn't say "protagonist" (sounds too much like a boxing match)
