This presumably refers to an "indagatoria", which is a "declaración que acerca del delito que se está averiguando se toma al presunto reo sin recibirle juramento" (DRAE). "Indagar", in this case, is something done in the presence of those arrested and involves taking a statement from them and, presumably, asking them questions. This is why I agree with Tom's suggestion of "examined". Investigating them, to me, implies making inquiries about them rather than actually speaking to them. |
