Persian (Farsi) term

تعیین

Persian (Farsi) to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature Test Questions
Greetings,

The meaning isn’t a problem, but somehow I'm at a loss for a good, idiomatic translation:
در این نوع سؤال، شما باید تعیین درست یا نادرست بودن هر عبارت را مشخص نمایید.

The text is about how to handle true or false questions.

All the best, and many thanks,

Simon

Discussion

Edward Plaisance Jr Aug 25, 2012:
comment... I would agree that it is probably not very common, at least in writing, just as the occurrences in English are not that common.

However, one place where you are likely to hear these kinds of mistakes is on television when a reporter is interviewing a "man in the street" and that person suddenly feels the need to "speak properly".

We also see it when "officials" (police/governmental/military/etc) who do not have much experience in public speaking make statements to the press and try to sound very educated.

Sports people are some of the worst offenders in the U.S.

Many years ago on TV in Tehran, they were interviewing people at Mehrabad airport who were gong on No Ruz holiday to the UK...one woman was very "pozu" and said "ma darim mirim london"...pronouncing "loan-doan" instead of "landan"...which made her look doubly ignorant since her pronunciation was incorrect in both English and Persian.

تعیین کردن I have never seen such case before, I don't think such case of hyper-correction occurs frequently.

تعیین - a word forced into the role of villain? Thank you all so much - I was really at a loss here.

Would you say that تعیین frequently features in cases of hypercorrection in Persian?
Edward Plaisance Jr Aug 24, 2012:
comment... I would agree that the use of تعیین here is redundant. We see lots of examples like this in English writing, too.

I think this usage would fall into the category of "hypercorrection" or "hyperurbanism"...see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypercorrection for an interesting discussion of this phenomenon.

determine / decide

This word is redundant in the sentence, though.

Many thanks, excellent!

Persian (Farsi) term (edited): مشخص کردن

specify/determine

I think the word "تعیین" makes no sense here and may be a mistake made by the writer as مشخص کردن conveys the same meaning as a verb! You may ignore تعیین!

Assigning

This sentence, though is not incorrect, is a poor Farsi sentence.
Initially the word "تعیین" is not necessary; but if you leave like it is, the sentence is asking to specify the assignment of "true or false" to the object.
