The base year chosen for the TFPI (TZMI's Feedstock Price Index) is 1980. By that date chloride grade slag had been accepted as a long-term product for the TiO2 pigment industry and synthetic rutile was also being used. Reasonably accurate data is available from that time onwards. Product prices are converted to a price per TiO2 unit before being combined in accordance with the product weightings. For the Global TFPI, all figures are expressed in nominal US dollars and are converted to real prices using changes in the US CPI. Australian prices are converted to real terms using the Australian CPI.
Because the product weightings are kept constant over time, the TFPI is a true reflection of the movement in overall feedstock producer prices. However, it does not necessarily reflect variations in the cost of feedstock inputs to individual consumers, which are influenced by changes in the particular mix of feedstocks for each buyer.
