I think the two terms are used interchangeably for the sake of variety. In the same way, you could use heat and round interchangeably.

Despite being in front in the first heat, the 19 year old Belgian was forced to give way to Max Nagl
who intensely attacked Desalle. ADAC MX Masters runner up Kornel Nemeth was unlucky.
The Hungarian already left in the fourth round after a technical defect…. It was Nagl, Desalle and Saylor in the second heat again which were ahead in the first rounds. Nagl and Desalle again fought for the top positions with Nagl finishing first.

I have found Durchgang in three internet dictionaries and in each case the meaning given is heat, not lap.
