Portuguese term

integrar para nao entregar

Portuguese to English Social Sciences History
An idea underlying Brazilian political policy towards the Amazon in the late 1960s, which was to "integrate" it physically into Brazil by colonising it with landless peasants of the North East, rather than risk the Amazon being effectively "annexed" by other Latin American countries. This was a slogan openly espoused by the Brazilian government, and marked its attitude towards "conservation" of the Amazon, that it to say, the government took on a developmental, as opposed to conservationist line, because of nationalistic fears and in order to solve internal problems with poverty.
thanks for your consideration.

My 10 cents.... very informative feed back, and I am sure very much appreciated by all answerers - personally I think the "Anschluss" references are little too heavy. maybe something along the lines of "Its our heritage, lets capitalise it"

I'm glad I asked you guys. I really like the first one, that was very clever, but I am less concerned with the rhyme, and more with capturing the political intent of the slogan, which is "let's colonise it so we don't lost sovereignty over it". I loved "use it or lose it", but agree that it is too informal and lacks that sense of political purpose. All four answers have given me something to think about, but none has quite nailed it yet. I guess that's why I addressed this to the professionals...it's tricky! Any further thoughts before I shut this down? Thanks very much for your participation, it's been really helpful.

use it or lose it

......
Example sentence:

One of the official slogans of the military government of the 1970s was ‘Integrar para não entregar’ (essentially, ‘Use it or lose it’).

Peer comment(s):

agree Georgia Morg (X) : I love this, but, as long as it's for a relatively informal publication, like a magazine or, indeed, Lonely Planet!!

Integration, not annexation/ separation/capitulation

I suppose it depends what nuance or aspect of "nao entregar" you'd rather highlight... I can't think of a rhyme that captures it perfectly! ;)

Others might also be: dissociation, delegation, negotiation...?
