In the reformulation proposed by
Weiss et al. (see also Eagle, 1987a), the boy’s fear of punishment at the
hands of the father is often based on the latter’s implicit communications
that carry the following message: “Don’t you dare try to outdo me. You
will incur my wrath if you do.” To be noted here is that in the above context,
castration anxiety is not understood literally. Rather, although the
term castration anxiety is retained, it is now being used symbolically, to
refer to feared punishment in general and to powerlessness at the hands of
a powerful figure.
