Y., Seeing the polarization, and knowing the proclivities of some of the participants in and answerers to this question, I don't want to start a hoo-huh in the Discussion and prefer to make this comment in a semi-privacy of this note.
I have no problem writing “hiring date“ in the employment record of a worker, a secretary, etc. But would you, in all honesty, put it in the employment papers of Morgan Stanley VP? I think not. I wouldn't. I personally know people (myself included) who to a proposition to "hire" them would answer: hire yourself a gardener. As for me, you either engage or employ me. Call me a snob... but in this day and age (of Harry Potter and DaVinci Code) what else is left to us except the subtleties of form? :)
