R v

English to German Law/Patents Law (general)
Hello, I am trying to figure out what "R" means in:

CRIMINAL PROSECUTION: R v John Smith

I understand that "v" is "versus". I know that usually instead "R" the word "people" or the name of the country are used. I found thousands of instances of "R v" in this context, but as far as I could check there was no unabreviated form of it. Thanks for the help!

Context? I agree with the posted answer, but worth pointing out that for historic cases it could also mean: Rex v Smith.

Bettina, post this as an answer! I've provided a reference below.
Bettina Rittsteuer Nov 2, 2010:
Regina Is this an English case? Then I'd suggest "Regina versus John Smith"

"In England and Wales (except in private prosecutions by individuals) an indictment is issued by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) on behalf of the Crown, i.e. the monarch, presently Queen Elizabeth II--who is theoretically the plaintiff in all public prosecutions under English law. This is why a public prosecution of a man called Mr. Smith would be referred to as "R v Smith" (short for "Regina versus Smith", Regina being Latin for Queen). The head of the CPS is the Director of Public Prosecutions. "
