: I can't comment on how natural this feels to a French ear, but it definitely has a similar poetic (aural) effect, and preserves the battlefield imagery perfectly

: but "muck and bullets" is not really referring to two separate things: just a picturesque way of saying "the front line", "the battle"//mais pour moi, cela correspond à une seule unité, donc pas à traduire par morceaux// no connotation of scandal, to me.
