индийское семибожье

Russian to English Art/Literary History

reference (don't see "post a reference" button) There are entries for both Aditi and Adityas (she is their mother) that mention Varuna

...of the Hinduism?
GaryG Jul 21, 2010:
Yes, probably so but, what do we call them in English? There are several times as many hits in Google on "Hindu" vs "Indian", regardless of whether the adjective is in combination with "gods" or "demigods".
Jack Doughty Jul 21, 2010:
That would be индусское, wouldn't it? *
GaryG Jul 21, 2010:
Maybe "Hindu" vice "Indian"? It's more tied to the religion than the geographical location, isn't it?

seven gods headed by Varuna

I don't think you need to keep the original word.

I would try something like,

In his view, the "seven altars" are a creation of the "cults of seven gods." In one instance he asserts that these are the "seven sons of Alita" from Indian mythology, seven gods headed by Varuna, in another hat they are Ahura-Mazda and his six "immortal saints" from Iranian mythology, and in the third instance states that...

Wait, I did find something on Varuna, in The Dictionary of Ancient Deities by Turner:

Originally the Adityas, known as great warriors...thought to be of Persian origin...The leader of the Adiyas was Varuna.

Спасибо большое.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Michael Kislov : No, Varuna has never been the head, the head is Indra I suppose (but only at these demigods' level). There are higher guys))

Yeah, I couldn't find him as the head either, but even if the original is wrong I'd leave it that way...
agree Natalie : Everything is correct, "headed by Varuna" means only that Varuna was the first of the seven

"индийское" я перевела бы как Indian, а не Hindu, так как автор использовал это слово, относящееся к географии, а не "индуистские", относящееся к религии
