It's about addressing groups of like-minded people / customers. People who have the same "affinities". So, I'm not sure whether it creates affinity. Infact I don't think so. Like Emma: "My basic definition of affinity marketing has been the delivery of product messages to like-minded consumers,” explains Berman.

Yes Ann, in a way it does, it makes more sense to me and I think I need to stick to the word 'affinity' which has obviously been picked up from the US in relation to websites.

affinity usage in the US, at least, is often linked today to being a fan of. For example, your kid attends XYZ school, your credit card has the logo of XYZ school and you earn points to help defray school costs AND the school earns points/money for school projects. Does this fit your context?

Magnet? I like your idea of a magnet. The way I see it it's talking about a site that is definitely going to attract people, but it could also be referring to creating a certain loyalty (as Graham puts it).

Like-minded? What do you think they really mean, Miranda? I'm being pedantic here, but they've invented a new word. Do they mean that the site is for like-minded people? Or that it's a sort of magnet for walkers etc. Or do they mean the site is user-friendly?

As in "a site that shares the same values as its users", which is a tad long-winded, but I don't think you can avoid expanding it in English. I think they are trying to say that the website knows what its users want - having such great affinity with them! - understands them, and can thus find them the info they need...Hope it helps!

I have recently worked with a Franco-English project for setting up home exchanges based on putting people in touch with people of similar interests or lifestyles. The French side referred to this as "affinités". There is no equivalent word in English and more of an explanation is needed. I suggest "community-based" as one way of trying to get this idea across. It may not work in your context, but might lead you to something better.
