French term

Un contrarié

Non-PRO French to English Art/Literary Cinema, Film, TV, Drama
Clearly I understand ths word as an adjective but I am finding it harder to find a noun - this relates to someone's attitude generally and their art, goes against the flow, but I am looking for a similar noun form?
Change log

Jan 27, 2010 19:41: SJLD changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (1): Evans (X)

Non-PRO (3): Jim Tucker (X), writeaway, SJLD

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Sarah Robertson (asker) Jan 27, 2010:
I think contrarian works the best here. The phrase in english now reads "As a classic contrarian, Eastwood has always liked the fantastical because he is never happy with linear stories...
Travelin Ann Jan 27, 2010:
Sarah,
Could you please give us the sentence?
Thanks.

Peer comment(s):

agree Ingeborg Gowans (X) : in Quebec they call him "mal commode", bin aber nicht sicher, ob das zu umgangssprachlich ist :(

Thanks, Ingeborg
agree John Detre : without further context, this may be the best we can do -- I understand "contrarié" to mean a person who is annoyed, irritated, etc.

Thanks, John
agree writeaway : clear from the (complete lack of) context/well you did ask but the answer is either invisible or not there at all. so it's hard to judge seriously without knowing what this is all about. or not? ;-)

Rebel

Malcontent is good, but it is very literary. Rebel could work as well.
