I was still pondering about "looping". This term is related to weaving (Schleifenbildung, Schlaufenbildung, Ketteln). I have consulted approx. 7 technical dictionaries and reference books, but found no other meaning. I suppose an typing error. It may be mismatched with "loping", which means chamfering, beveling, trimming, lapping.

The phrase "Welding and grinding/sanding/looping of pipe joint elements such as clamping rings and end frames" can be translated by "Schweißen und Schleifen/Schmirgeln/Entgraten von Rohrverbindungselementen wie Klemm- oder Spannringe und Endstücke oder -flansche." (acc. execution).

Sorry, it was the German phrase to translate:
Schweissen und Schleifen von Rohrverbindungselementen wie Flanschringen und Flanschrahmen => Welding and grinding of pipe-connecting elements like flange rings or flange frames.
1. Butt-joint connection between two flat-oval pipe sections (28) made from sheet metal, wherein a flange frame (10) is pushed onto the end (26) of each pipe section (28) and fixed to it, and connecting devices (36, 38) are provided for seal-tight assembly of the two flange frames (10), characterised in that each flange frame (10) consists of only two opposing straight flange sections (12) and two opposing essentially semi-circular curved flange sections (14), which are designed as hollow profiles, and in that the flange sections (12, 14) are retained in their opposite position by retaining devices (16). http://www.linguee.de/search?direction=auto&query=flanschrah...
The only subjects are listed below: Looping may refer to: - in computer programming, control loops including the main event loop - in film production, automated dialogue replacement - in music, music loop. - in aviation, performing a loop as an aerobatic maneuver - a repeating drawings in an animated cartoon - a foreign translation for the animated TV series TaleSpin. - in education, the practice of moving groups of children up from one grade to the next with the same teacher. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Looping
Hi Beatrix, When I composed my answer to your question, I was conscious of your dilemma concerning grinding/sanding/looping and sought to address that very issue ‘Sanding’is more appropriate to wooden surfaces. ‘Looping’ is more often found in electrical/electronic contexts – it is instantly recognisable in such contexts if used in the past tense: geschleift = looped; geschliffen = ground. I paused before posting ‘grinding’ on its own because, as Kim Metzger points out, this would suggest too thorough a process. I therefore decided to suggest the less vigorous ‘grind smooth’ which gathers 22,500 hits on Google in combination with ‘weld’ and ‘joints’ (see http://tinyurl.com/ygk9bx3). Trudy Peters’ answer confirmed this. The later answer does not, in my opinion, add anything further to the debate, except perhaps a rather dubious explanation of the meaning of ‘looping’. Regards AJS
is the general term and comprises all other specialized grinding processes like sanding, fine grinding, precision grinding, smoothing, polishing, honing, lapping and so on. I would hesitate to specify a certain process in this case. Note 1: The weld seams needs always to be grinded roughly, then finely. The surface finishing (e.g. smoothing or polishing) depends on the required surface roughness (to avoid if unknown). Note 2: Smoothing means Glätten or Schlichten and may be effected either by grinding (including a.m. processes), by manual filing, by sandblastering or other processes. http://dict.leo.org/ende?lp=ende&lang=de&searchLoc=0&cmpType...
Okay, from some of the answers I gathered that I might not have been clear on my question and the context. My apologies, this is my first question here and I'm definitely learning a lot from this discussion.
The sentence that needs translation is the first one. It's part of a job description on a professional reference of a welder. I was not sure how to translate "schleifen" in this context and came upon the 3 options of grinding/sanding/looping. I researched the company the welder worked for: it produces those clamping rings but from the context it's not clear at which stage(s) the welder is involved. If I read theses answers here correctly the term "smooth grinding" or "smoothing" might be the best if he works in the finishing stages of the process. The more general term "grinding" might be more appropriate for the beginning of the process or the general handling.
Disc sander: A disc sander is most commonly known as a stationary machine that consists of a replaceable circular shaped sandpaper attached to a wheel being electrically spun around. The usually wooden work piece, (although other materials can be shaped and worked on such as plastics and other soft materials, even aluminum), is sat on a front bench that can be adjusted to various angles. It can be used for rough or fine sanding depending on the sanding grit used. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sander
Polishing and buffing are finishing processes for smoothing a workpiece's surface using an abrasive and a work wheel. Technically polishing refers to processes that use an abrasive that is glued to the work wheel, while buffing uses a loose abrasive applied to the work wheel. Polishing is a more aggressive process while buffing is less harsh, which leads to a smoother, brighter finish. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polishing_(metalworking)
As no reference can be entered into the reference section, I use the discussion section.
Some peers proposed smoothing or smooth grinding (similar to fine grinding, precision grinding, polishing and honing). Therfore I googled for these terms:
Fine grinding and flat honing both describe the same revolutionary, low-cost surface finishing process. Fine grinding and flat honing are a high-speed lapping process that is capable of achieving high precision finishes at very reasonable costs : .. where fine grinding / flat honing has become a preferred technique for finishing high-precision parts at a very low cost http://www.laptechind.com/fine_grinding.html (Linked from a Wikipedia article)
No entry for smoothing, smooth grinding or grind smooth in Wikipedia.
was not the question. But I looked also, whether appropriate translations exists for this word, similar to grinding or sanding. I could only found Schlaufenbildung, Schleifenbildung, etc.. So I ask me why this word is used. I understand it in only figurative way, but it may also refer to buffing or wobbling
