Suspiro é feito de clara de ovo e açucar.

Portuguese to English Other Cooking / Culinary dessert
Não me refiro ao "merengue" e sim ao suspiro mesmo que são feitos de clara de ovo e açucar em formato pequeno e redondo e que são levados ao forno. Quando retirados, ficam super crocantes do lado de fora e macio e úmido por dentro...

MerIngue! MerIngues or Meringue Cookies, are made of egg white and sugar. However, merEngue is a Latin American dance style, so be careful with the spelling and the pronunciation - they are quite different! :o)
David Drysdale (X) Nov 15, 2009:
You actually can find the "needle in the haystack" via Google and Yahoo, however it's not always colloquial or daily usage . . . Exemplo: canhoto ou sinistro no Brasil?
Marlene Curtis Nov 15, 2009:
Meringues That's how I always called them, Amy. It goes to show one can find anything in Google...
Amy Duncan (X) Nov 14, 2009:
I always thought these were referred to simply as "merengues," so when I saw Marlene's comment about merengue cookies (which I also had never heard of before) I Googled it and was surprised to see how many hits there were. Learn something new every day!
rir Nov 14, 2009:
Marlene Curtis Nov 14, 2009:
Meringue cookies???? No way!!!
David Drysdale (X) Nov 14, 2009:
meringues . . OK! A countable noun? I ate 7 meringues last night at the party! Interesting!
rir Nov 14, 2009:
or meringue cookies, to avoid confusion with the other meringues used in pies, etc....

Veronikka . . Are you looking for something to replace or an equivalent for "suspiro?" Sweets? Treats?

Meringues are made from egg white(s) and sugar.

A suggestion.

I would go for "egg white and sugar", using "egg white" as a non-count noun, but "egg whites" is also possible, as you crack several eggs to get the whites.

meringues (in portuguese "suspiro" = sigh) are made of egg white and sugar

Sometimes it's hard to translate a whole concept, because it simply doesn't exist in the other language. English speakers would call a "suspiro" meringue after they see it and taste it, so if you want to keep the poetry of the name, I suggest you keep the original and translate it literally.
Peer comment(s):

agree rir : meringue não está errado, daí ter dado agree, mas french meringue or meringue cookie tb se usa e não gera confusão

Obrigado, por isso eu sugeri incluir o nome em português, para conservar o nome poetico.

Meringue Cookies are made with just two main ingredients: stiffly beaten egg whites and superfine (caster) sugar. To ensure the egg whites reach maximum volume, have your mixing bowl and beaters clean and free of grease. It is easier to separate your eggs while they are cold. Once separated, cover the egg whites and let them come to room temperature before using (about 30 minutes). Cover and refrigerate the egg yolks for another use. Superfine sugar makes the best meringues as it dissolves easier in the whites. To make your own, take 3/4 cup (150 grams) granulated white sugar and process in your food processor until very fine.

There are a few things to keep in mind when making meringue cookies. The standard ratio when making hard meringues is 1/4 cup (50 grams) of granulated white sugar for every egg white. This amount of sugar is needed to give the meringue its crispness. Adding the sugar gradually to the egg whites ensures that the sugar completely dissolves and does not produce a gritty meringue. Cream of tartar is used in the whipping of egg whites to stabilize them and allows them to reach maximum volume. Also, it is a good idea to use parchment paper or aluminum foil to line your baking sheets, not wax paper, as the meringue will sometimes stick to wax paper.
