For an article discussing the importance of active community involvement as a means of empowering the citizens of Venezuela:
Advierte Ferrer que “Si nosotros no creamos los consejos comunales en nuestras comunidades, no solamente quedan esos espacios vacíos y son ocupados por el régimen para implantar su proceso de ideologización, sino que los CC se convierten en los secuestradores de la Sociedad Civil”.
In other parts of the article, I translated "espacio" as opportunity, but I don't think that works here. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Selected
vacuum
"to leave a vacuum"but "empty spaces" would also work
Note from asker:
I thought "vacuum" was an excellent choice; however, I went with "void," as I felt it fit better within the overall context of the translation. Thank you! |

IMO this may work here. Good luck!

empty spaces / open
I believe the straightforward solution could work here; after all, they talk about open or empty spaces that if left unattended can be "usurpated" by the regime.

: KIS. You mean "usurped by the regime". Why does nobody like Chavez?

español term (edited):
no solamente quedan esos espacios vacíos y son ocupados por el régimen para implantar
it will not only leave the field open for the regime to move in and impose
Seems much more natural here taking into account the Gestalt of the sentence as a whole, than any of the other alternatives proposed thus far.
Suerte.

an empty void [is left]
This leads into the next part of the sentence and the idea that the void is soon filled by people speaking on behalf of the regime.
Note from asker:
I felt that "void" fit best within the context of the translation, and that's the term I wound up using. |

cracks or gaps in the social mesh
All suggestions are good. A more literary approach would be "gaps/crack in the social mesh" that regime will then fill with ...you get the idea
