When his master discovered that he had stolen a shilling, caused William Carey shame and fear, and he acknowledged that he was not only a thief, but a sinner in many other ways. He was forced to abandon his self-righteousness and boasting, fearing he would be put to shame before the whole village, and possible removed from his livelihood. Above all he was made to think about the eternal punishment of sin. The relief he felt when his master forgave him and allowed him to remain at his work did not deliver him from the ***painful insight*** he had experienced. It was only as he called to mind the Saviour, Who through wonderful grace and mercy was willing to pardon and forgive, that he felt there was any hope for him.
