French term

Etat des lieux des acteurs du secteur de la securité

French to English Social Sciences Government / Politics
c'est le titre d'une section dans un document sur la reforme sécuritaire. Je n'arrive pas à trouver la formulation en anglais.

Merci

@jmleger secteur here does not mean "industry"
mimi 254 (asker) Oct 16, 2009:
@William Thanks! You are right when you talk of "groups having an explicit role in the sector". the author is thus presenting the sector and its key players before the reform.
jmleger Oct 16, 2009:
Secteur la traduction de secteur en anglais est industry que je sache.
William A McNab Oct 15, 2009:
actors vs key players Just a thought I had upon waking up this morning (inspired by the Godfather series):
The local mafia may be key players in the security sector as they have targeted and bribed officials, but does this make them actors in it? I believe not.
Now, perhaps we need more context from Mimi, but my understanding is that here we are referring to groups having an explicit role in the sector (the role or performance of these groups will be reviewed in the "reforme securitaire").
In this case I envisage the actors to be: local and national police forces, the military, private security workers etc (ie, more than just key players)
...does anybody else feel there is a distinction to be made here?

Overview of key players in the security sector

I often translate "état des lieux" as "summary" or "overview" and prefer "players" for "acteurs".
Note from asker:
thanks Emma. unlike Juliebarba, I really think it's "overview" because the paragraph is a presentation of the sector and as it is before the reform.

agree Chris Hall : Perfect Emma - you are spot on here.

Thank you, Chris.
agree William A McNab : I like "overview". Nice and tidy.

"Concise" is my middle name :-)
agree Clive Phillips : You beat me to it, Emma. Nicely phrased with help from Chris.

Thanks Clive. I didn't acknowledge Chris' mention of "key players" as I usually use that for "acteurs" anyway.
agree Clair Pickworth : perfect!

Thanks, Clair.
neutral Julie Barber : Hi Emma, as the context is reform I would think that it means assessing / reviewing the situation rather than providing an overview. I suppose that it could be either, we'd need the para that follows the title

Hi Julie. Maybe - in which case, Eutychus' "review" would be better.
agree Colin Morley (X) : Good translation

Peer comment(s):

disagree Chris Hall : "Safety" not necessary here; "stakeholders" - don't know where this comes from; "security sector" should be mentioned.

Evaluating the actors in the security sector

"Evaluating" could be subsitituted by many words (appraisal of/ review of/ assessing/ assessment of etc).
I think you may want to keep the rest of the phrase intact and close to the original.

Description of the problematic of civil-military relations in the country. Which are the main actors in the security sector, and what is their role and mutual relationship?

Peer comment(s):

neutral Chris Hall : "actors" is not right here. "protagonists" or "key players" would be much better. /// Following your reference which I have just seen, I will amend my comment to neutral. /// Well, I personally don't like actors here; I much prefer key players.

"actors in the security sector" receives 306,000 G-hits. Moreover, the articles all look to be relevant to the subject field (which is all the info we have for now). "protagonists" gets no hits and "key players" receives seven

Inventory of key players in the security sector
