French term

valoriser les médicaments

French to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals
I'm not sure if this could be "to salvage?" "to recover" in some way?

Thanks!

Discussion

Lionel_M (X) Oct 8, 2009:
Old meds One should also consider that the aim of "recycling" is also to withdraw from ambiant and bins out of date drugs that will end up in soils, fiumes....By "taking care of them", these associations or whatever they are, will chemically destroy these drugs to limit their impact on ambient. This is also part of "valorisation" and achieved by "recycling" these meds.
Lionel_M (X) Oct 8, 2009:
Lisa, I perfectly understand your meaning, but the fact is that, in this texte, it's written: "Cette association à but non lucratif collecte et valorise les Médicaments Non Utilisés (MNU)". So, Cyclamed or whoever is not relevant for the translation, as it is not relevant if it is true or not. The point is that we must translate that drugs will be "valorisées" in the context of an association which claims it will take care of them.
Sincerely, this business does not care about boxes, but cares about drug. For instance, many antibiotics are in box of 12 while you should take 2 pills a day for 5 days; the 2 remaining pills will be "good" for at least another year !
May be "recycling" does not cover exactly what is done with these drug, but in French, it is the formulation used when talking about drugs brought back to pharmacy. See ref in note. I hope this help
Richardson Lisa Oct 8, 2009:
Sorry Lionel, letting my thoughts run out loud again so not very clear. I don't think Cyclamed takes them anymore, last time I went into the pharmacy they said they couldn't guarantee what happened to the meds after. My concern with using the word recycling (which was my first thought) was that I don't see how they can recycle the out of date meds? They can recycle the packaging and presumably the unfinished in date ones, but what do they do with out of date ones? so this is what I meant about recycling being too specific and not covering all eventualities.
Lionel_M (X) Oct 8, 2009:
Il sa'git ici d'une association qui justement s'occupe de recycler les médicaments (valoriser). Personne ne dit que ceci se fait toujours, malheureusement ! En outre je ne comprends pas "exploit"
Richardson Lisa Oct 7, 2009:
Recycling Yes, this is the meaning, but I was under the impression every time I took my unfinished medicine into the pharmacy that they recycled them? Well at least the packaging etc.The word that comes to mind here is 'exploit' but that has negative connotations in English....Recycle is too specific...I'll keep thinking

recycler

Tout à fait d'accord avec Lisa, il s'agit ici je pense de récupérer les MNU pour les recycler.

re-use spare medicines as and when possible

This would take care of all aspects...I feel !
You don't need to recycle systematically...

evaluate/ assess

In this context, I feel basically what the organisation is doing is evaluating or assessing the worthiness of the medicines deposited by the customers in the pharmacy - based on the expiry date etc and categorizing them for taking the follow up action. In this context evaluate or assess might be a proper term to be used.
Example sentence:

Mechanisms to evaluate the clinical and/or cost-effectiveness of medicines are used in a majority of. European Union member states
