compensable

Spanish to English Bus/Financial Law: Contract(s)
Clause from an employment contract:
La retribución que, por cualquier concepto, perciba el trabajador será absorbible y compensable con cualesquiera mejoras que se establezcan en el futuro por el Convenio Colectivo o Norma de aplicación general, siempre que los mínimos legalmente exigibles no superen, en cómputo anual, la retribución total pactada, cualquiera que sea su naturaleza o denominación.

Discussion

patinba Sep 30, 2009:
Collective bargaining I think it should be "will be" rather than "may be". The clause is to protect employers who grant raises in advance of any law from then being made to grant additional wage hikes when the govt. or unions mandate them. The raise granted will be offset against the subsequent award, so that the worker only gets the difference, if any. I don't think "compensate with future wage improvements" is quite right in this context.

Thanks everyone, I definitely understand what it is getting at a lot better now. Thanks LisaMac and patinba I agree with you both and think that compensable is either compensated with or offset. I am thinking of translating "será absorbible y compensable con" as either "may be supplemented or compensated with" or "may be supplemented or offset by".

offsettable against

This is what it means. Compensable is not really a direct cognate, as in English it only has a mainly legal use, and means "able to be compensated for or justifying compensation" (Shorter OED) and would apply to a loss or hardship, not the case here
