What if I use engine oil rated as 10W40 in an engine which is designed for 20W40?

Oil used to lubricate as opposed to fuel

As Kim says, but with the clarification that this means that it is not fuel, it is what keeps the moving parts of the engine lubricated and stops the engine seizing up. The rating is system is explained in the reference below
