Всем понятно, что за год нельзя построить даже обычный 12-тиэтажный дом в городе, а уж тем более город-сад в чистом поле.

Discussion

Michael Korovkin Apr 28, 2009:
what nonsense though! чистое поле – самое оно – строить новый город–сад. А где–ж его строить – в центре Магнитогорска?

bare landscape

привел этот вариант по причине наличия противопоставления "голый ландшафт" vs "сад": resulting in smth like 'transform the site of bare landscape' into 'apealling garden retreat' in a day
Example sentence:

10 Oct 2007 ... From Bare Landscape to Appealing Gardens ... Read more: Transform your landscape with one of these garden designs ...

Peer comment(s):

agree Alexandra Taggart : "In the bare landscape" it is that "чистое полюшко-поле, где лишь ветер свободный гуляет" I suppose.

to make a garden in the desert

As it was said sarcastically I've translated in the same way.

It is very awkward wording. "Чистое поле" has a positive meaning, it means " rye/wheat grows only" or "wild flowering steppe, no trees", eather or - it is assosiated with a feeling of freedom. But it seems that the author tends to imply " a barren land where there is nothing but stones".
Peer comment(s):

agree stasbetman : And is it possible to strand this idiom in the text? I mean "to build a garden-town in the desert"

Thanks! The text is about a shortage of time.If Pigs could fly...
agree Oleksandr Kupriyanchuk : It is even possible to paraphrase a bit. Let it be rather in... tundra :) or in a tough landscape that fits the geographical CONTEXT.

Thanks!Great as an idea:"Taj Mahal complex inundated with roses in tundra".

Peer comment(s):

neutral Alexandra Taggart : "in", my dear, "a land" ."on a land" - there is nothing specific, it is not a place, could be a barren continent.An island. You can say it, would not be the best choice.Happy? Анд финиш мани сингз.

Финиш Ин Яз? I especially like "ireland". I am sure the Irish would appreciate your example.
